HOTEL REVIEW: MZION Weligama, Sri Lanka
The hotel is about as perfect a spot if you’re a surfer. No doubt about it. I don’t surf but seeing that many surfers must mean it’s a good place to surf. Getting to Galle is very simple and is just a 40 rupee train ride from Weligama to Galle. The train ride back will 40 or 70 rupees depending on the class. You’ll be fine with a 40 rupee ticket going from Weligama to Galle but you may want to “splurge” on a 70 rupee ticket coming back because that train is going to be much more crowded.
Breakfast was served at the Weligama Kitchen, a buffet style restaurant located on the bottom floor. The selection was expansive with make to order stations that included an egg station as well as a pho station and even a Sri Lankan egg dish that was delicious but I have no clue what it’s called. There are a few restaurants onsite but I only had a light dinner at the lounge in the lobby bar area at night. I believe there is even a rooftop bar as well but I didn’t go up there.
I was given a corner room and it was stunning. I thought the design was odd in that it was basically identical to the design of the Marriott in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The bathroom is massive with a separate tub and shower. The thing that makes the bathroom unique is the glass sliding doors that you can open and close depending on what you want. So, if you want an unobstructed view of the ocean while taking a bath, you can leave the doors open. If you want a little more privacy, you can close them.
